Our memorable journey across the varying landscapes of southern Portugal starts in the fortress village of Monsaraz. Heading out over low rolling hills, we follow tracks that lead us past lakes and rivers.
Though generally less technical than our trips further north we cross a wide range of terrain that provides rewarding biking with the occasional steeper climbs and some technical descents. We cross the southern plains, pass through classic white villages with their Moorish heritage, passing fields of wheat, corn and the occasional shepherd herding their flock.
At Santa Clara we stay at an excellent Pousada with great views over a lake, a chance to relax and swim. The contrasting Algarve hills are a wilder, more undulating landscape, as we cycle through forests and on to the coast. Cycling through beautiful fishing villages, past bays and wild beaches we reach our final destination of Sagres, known as the ‘sleeping place of the gods’ on the south-west tip of Portugal. Here we have a celebratory final evening of wine, seafood and reflection.
